Blog Site Ready to Go!

Jambo Blog Followers!

This is the site for the December 2012-January 2013 trip for the CSU Student Leadership, Involvement and Civic Engagment (SLICE) alternative winter break group. So long as we can get a signal in our pretty remote location in Kenya, we'll post on this site just about every day to let you know what we've been up to and how we're spending our time.

We will be home-based in a community called Archer's Post, Kenya located in the Samburu region of the country. We wil generally stay in this area for the duration of our trip. There are a few wildlife parks within a mile or two, including Samburu National Reserve and Buffalo Springs National Reserve.  Plenty of animals to see in these parks including elephants, zebras, giraffe, impala, oryx, gazelles...and the predators in these parks are lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals and more, though predators are more elusive for viewing.  We will be very near the Samburu National Reserve. See the map below for a general idea of which part of Kenay this is.

While in Archers Post, we will be assisting in a few local primary schools including Gir Gir Primary School and Lorubae Primary School.  We will also do some work with a few women's villages. Check out http://www.umojawomen.org/ and http://unitywomensvillage.wordpress.com/story/ to learn more about these places. The projects there will vary. In the past we have helped repairs the (mud) roofs to some huts, build a cement platform for a water tank, and paint the classroom in their nursery school.  We will also do some projects for the Samburu Youth Education Fund (www.samburuyouth.org) related to secondary school access for local youth, and finally, we will do counts for all mammals for the Save the Elephants conservation organization(http://www.savetheelephants.org/).

Our arrival date to Nairobi is December 29. We'll arrive late and jet-lagged, and then take the 6 hour journey north to Archers Post the next day.  Feel free to comment on our posts, and we will try to get to the blog each day so you can follow our journey!
